Barrier® (ADC and IC)

The Barrier® product is exclusively produced by the Burns Company. The process to produce Barrier® is patented. The patent is held by the individual owners of Burns Company.  

Barrier® is an Alternative Daily Cover product approved for use by the Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware Departments of Environmental Protection. It is also approved for use as an Intermediate Cover product in Pennsylvania. As ADC, Barrier® replaces the use of 6”of soil – a non-renewable resource – to cover “working face” waste daily at landfills. As IC, Barrier® replaces the use of 12” of soil – a non-renewable resource – to cover “dormant areas” of waste at landfills. 

Barrier® is produced from construction and demolition materials that were not able to be recovered as reuse in their independent form -- for example: plywood, contaminated cardboard, window glass, etc.

Barrier® has been tested, approved and used in permitted landfills in 3 states since for over 10 years. 

LEED Project  acceptance: Barrier® is a product made from recovered materials that is used to replace soil (a non-renewable resource), at landfills. The beneficial use of Barrier® as a recycled product has been acknowledged and accepted. Soil used to cover waste then becomes waste and cannot be reclaimed; therefore the use of Barrier® to replace this process has deemed Barrier® a recycled product.
